Final Photo Type Post

Urban
This piece is considered Urban in its style and i found it from my brother who designed it for a nightclub that he DJ'ed at in Pittsburgh. I consider it to be an urban design due to its color choice and the fact that the imagery and type style is very nonchalant. Tho it is hard to see the information has to be searched out because it is all over the poster. It also uses a few different fonts and sizes both going vertically and horizontally in the frame. The colors or that of a night city with the street lights coming down, and it is for an Urban type of even with the music choice as well.

Graffiti
The art Graffiti is a difficult skill to master. I found this example of graffiti on the web and thought it was a very strong example for how graffiti can be both legible and illegible at the same time. when i looked at this first i knew it was referencing Mario, and that it said Ftwo Bros. But the top part still confuses me. I  have guessed it says "THES" but i think its something else. regardless the design takes time and is very thought out. there are also many different styles of graffiti, and this is one of the cleaner ones.

Hand Painted
This one is an example of hand painted type, for no other reason because it is hand painted. I found this picture also on the web and found it to have a style all its own. first i noticed it was not on a flat surface to paint on, so right away it was going to have texture in the design. then i saw that some of the letters looked traced, but then noticed the "no" in the middle and realized it was a little sloppy. The marks on each side of the NO also where done freehand. the design is strong and simple and i feel best represents painted type

Interesting Color Treatment
Text type with interesting color treatment was an easy one to find. again i found this poster for the Innovation Awards in 2006, and liked how each letter of the word ideas was divided up and then had corresponding words underneath. all the word under the word ideas related to the concept of the word IDEAS. I found it cool also how they put such strong bright colors on a dull gray background, and that they didn't just throw in on a black background instead of gray.

Neon
Neon typography was easy to find, and i wanted to find one with not only had neon as the color choice but also some how used neon lights as its base for type too. The sign makes me thing of an old night club and the urban writing underneath only adds to the effects. I feel its a strong ad as well due to the strong neon color choice and that they made the image look like its lighting up the other words.

Suburban
Finally the suburban typography design I found off the web, but i could have found it anywhere. by definition the word suburban mean boring , dull, and plain. So this sign basically is just that. its one color, It doesn't have a title, and just basically says what the store is. The only thing that they did when making the sign was point out that there was a 24hr ATM, and they did this by making it a little bigger then the others. Simple and boring.

Effects of the Digital Type Revolution

As times have changed so have the way people read and react to thing. Things’ ranging from what is seen on TV or the Computer screen, or the way people view art. The Digital age has made people want to see faster and as an effect made it easier to see more together. Typography has become more of an aesthetic essential and not just a cool idea for a letterhead or a title. Thanks to the revolution of digital type, the use of Typography has impacted the digital world so much more then many people know, from web designed pages, posters, and magazine articles. The world of type has changed in the 21st century and can easily be seen if you take notice.
First of all we can see the biggest impact of typography in the WWW as soon as you open a browser and look for something. Instead of seeing basic code like we did when computers and the Internet first come to the public. Now, we see colorful and extravagant designs, eye catching and confusing at times. Letters going different directions and are different sizes and fonts, some faded and other bolded. All meant to make the viewer look. Gisele Muller talks about how simply using HUGE type in your web can catch the desired attention of your audience and it is up to the designer weather to use it in one word or sentence or the whole thing (1). The artier the site the more prevalent Typography usually is, not only because of the target audience but because the designer probably got excited about his type design. Regardless Typography in the 21st century in web design is mainly for conveying a message in the page layout to appeal to the audience.

Now, for Posters and Ads it is essential that the type layout be strategic if not the most intentional design element in the entire design process. When the focus of a posters design IS type, then it take a designer a lot more time and patience to make sure his message is clear, legible, and artistic AT THE SAME TIME (2). The design for a typographical poster is hard but can also be the most appealing due to the use of letters and fonts not just as letters in a word, but as a design element. For example the design in this piece has the, “S” as the image or the design elements that draws the viewers eye in and around the page. But, it doesn’t always have to be flashy for the design to make a statement or catch the viewer’s eye. A simple design with a clear statement and strong contrasting color choice can make the same strong typographical message as one with more (4).
Not only has type changed in ads and on posters of the years but also in famous logo design that also changed with the times, tying to appeal to a newer generation. Look at Pepsi and Coke for example; Pepsi has literally changed its logo 11 times from its original logo in 1898, while Coca-Cola’s logo has never changed its design since 1885. Interesting to see when typography works for one generation, sometimes it can last forever. The point is, the original corporate mark for Coke has remained unchanged for 124+ years. Except for a few tweaks here or there. Now, that’s timeless typography (3).
And Finally Typography for print has changed more then anything thanks to the digital revolution. Because of the different media that people can get information from paper and print just doesn’t have as much appeal as it did back in the good old days. Print ads have the hardest job, due to the already dwindling amount of viewers and how if someone does come across your article or ad in a magazine you are a page flip away from being forgotten. So in those seconds that you have the viewer’s attention you must convey a clear message in one singular image or design. The best way I can put it, I cant, so this quote should sum it all up, “A print ad copy consists of two elements: visual imagery and typograph. Although a picture is worth a thousand words, but the power of words cannot be underestimated. And the best way to illustrate words is through effective use of typography (5).” Older typography ads were simple, and to the point, maybe a picture, with a few words and a logo…that’s all. Now a day, the ads can have so many things going on that you really have to think and take notice to everything going on from one page to another. The best example I have is of the two Coke ads posted, where one of a woman on the beach reaching for a Coke and it simply says, “ What I Want is a Coke” and then the logo that says Drink Coca-Cola. Then the more resent ones only have the log in the corners with a little bit of text, and the actual design elements are either the Lemon peal curled up like the Coke “C” or the outline of the Coke Bottle with type inside.

Over all the digital revolution has taken effect on the design quality’s of all media and is a required asset for designers to have as well as be able to communicate and use properly. Type has never been need more as an artistic design tool rather then just a simple language then it does now in the 21st century, and I feel it will only continue to grow with the new mediums and newer designs every year henceforth. From web based type to simple ads in a newspaper, typography and its need to be used as more then just type has never been more apparent than now.

MId Term Photo Post

My sample type for this picture is obviously childlike typography. I literarily had my 2 year old nephew write his name, mind you he doesn't write that well so I had him do it about 50 times. This photo was the best example of a readable type coming from a childlike source, or from an actual child. its in a from that can be read but at the same time has no true form or size dimensions. By the way the word is Atly.

The sample here of an example Typographical error. But mine is a design of a word that intentionally has had an error implicated to make a new or special design. I feel that in the days of texting and instant messages a new type of communication has come to fruition. you see more and more no a days the implications of numbers and symbols meshed together to create words that have a unique look and design. i just created this one in photoshop but your can make it in any word processing program.

This one is of the sample type Asian Typography. Its a Tattoo on my brothers shoulders with a asian symbol in the middle that translates to imagination in english, and on each side of symbol it has a graffiti type design that at first glance you just see a cool tribal design, YET if you really look at it you see it says real on the left and real on the right BUT the symbol is mirrored from one side to the other. It's a very unique design and required some REAL IMAGINATION.

This is a sample of Historical typography. Its taken from my local newspaper The Frederick News Post. I see it as a historical type of type due to the classic celtic appearance and the script feel of the heading of the newspaper. It reminds me of the letters your would see at the beginning of a fairy tale where the first letter is five lines tall  and super wide but the rest of the page is set as a much smaller font size.

For Business/Banking typography I immediately notice the numbers at the bottom of my checks. The numbers have a very unique design in that they don't just look like regular numbers but they have almost a futuristic bold features to the ends and through out the actual numbers. They almost have a feature similar to an old typewriter. i feel it might be done this way not at a cool effect but rather to assure there is no confusion in a computer or a scanner that these numbers are not letters

This is a sample of the logo typography. I took the picture of my fan, and its logo design on the front of the fan. I feel its a bold design to stand out and they made it a strong metal color on a plain white plastic cover. Lasko is the logos name and I feel it could have been cooler if
the logo had some how been a little bigger or more unique its type. but still a strong design.

Project 1 Links

OK well I went out into the world of typography and found some really cool thing. I found that typography is more then just throwing together some fonts and resizing them to look appealing, but instead I found that it is an art in and of itself. I found 3 websites that are dedicate to typography and the artistic and aesthetic qualities of type. As well as, a blog called Typographica which had a lot of different post about typography from a bunch of different people. Ill be posting the link below to each of the site, as well as with some of my favorite pictures so far. Please leave me some comment on what you think.

Till the next post...

Nau and Later!

WELCOME ALL!!!!

Here we are at the first EVER blog post for Trevor T. Nau.

Let you all be witnesses to my stupidity and intellect perfectly balanced together in the words that flow through my fingertips and onto the internet's version of paper, and straight to your eyes to read and enjoy.

This being my first official post, I feel I should start it off with a personal introduction to who I am and why I am here.

My name is Trevor Nau, and the Nau is pronounced " Now". I am 23 years old and have recently graduated form Towson University with my bachelors in Electronic Media and Film. I, like every man, LOVE sports and hope to one day be in sports editing or sports filming for the DC/Baltimore area. I'm a huge Hockey fan, with the Washington Capitals being my team, and a Baseball as well as Football fan. Unlike what you might think i am NOT a an Oriole fan nor am I a Ravens or Redskins fan, but on the contrary I am a New York Fan, Yankees for baseball and Giants for football. I have a lot of people that say I am a banned wagoner ...person, but I assure you I have followed my team from before I knew what teams were. I play for a number of different roller hockey teams, but now that I am back at Towson University for graduate courses I am once again able to play for my Towson Roller Hockey team. Im the D1 starting goalie and love to make our teams poster and player profiles. I am a Photoshop fanatic and make magic happen every time i mess with anything in photoshop.

ALSO I am Obsessed with the number or number's 422. I see these numbers every where and can usually find a way to make them appear. For example, i would be driving down the road and see an exit number, and it will be exit 4, and then the mile marker right after will be mile 22...These are so common that I have to tell my friend when I see them. Needless to say my friends have learned to either ignored me or hate me for when these event take place they see my joy at there distress. I was born on 4/22 AT 4:22am and thats kind of a big deal for me. I just see these numbers as mu lucky charms and will probably look for them in my assignments for class as well.

NAU, on to my purpose of starting this blog. Well I wouldn't call it forced but more mediatory but i don't mind doing it. I am already a social networking enthusiast and participate in both Facebook and myspace, as well as the occasional Tweet here and there. But I am taking online classes back at Towson University for web design. My typography class requires me to create an online blog that I can post photos of different and unique text/ fonts that catches my eye in real life. Then once posted I can have my fellow classmates comment and post onto my blog.

So again welcome, and enjoy my new blog.

Until the next post........
